You're damn right I take this seriously."<br /><br /><br />Example of an opening scene:<br /><br /><br />(Ominous music)<br /><br />Wide shots of foggy mountains, dark forests, whatever... zoom in to:<br /><br />(The "EVIL" group)<br /><br />A very sinister group of characters (about 10) is hurrying feverishly<br />through a forest, obviously hot on the trail of their prey (perhaps with some creepy tracking<br />dog-things in front). They look to be characters ripped right out of LOTR, maybe even a little meaner and grittier. There is nothing cartoonish about them.<br /><br />(switch to another "GOOD" group)<br /><br />This group (about 10 in number) of similarly 'serious,' though slightly<br />more 'good' in appearance, LOTR-esque characters prepares themselves for the incoming battle. As the other characters prepare themselves and move to various defensive positions on the side of the road, one particularly powerful looking mage stands unmoving in the center of the road - staring intently down the road towards the sound of the approaching followers.<br /><br />(back to "EVIL" group)<br /><br />The pace has picked up... as the group rides past one clump of bushes, an<br />ethereal eye floats up and spies the group. Noticed by the rider of one horse... a nod and a<br />glance is exchanged between 2 characters and the eye is quickly destroyed by a spell or arrow. As the group thunders onward, 3 wizardly characters slide off the back of the horses... landing without a stumble, as the rest of the group gallops on, without even breaking stride.<br /><br />(Switch to "GOOD" group)<br /><br />A second mage staring down into a puddle sees the scene unfold (and his<br />eye/spy) destroyed. Tense glances are exchanged. Another character glances nervously towards the road... the previously mentioned mage, still stands alone and unmoving in the middle of the road.<br /><br />(Back to "EVIL" group)<br /><br />They emerge from over a slight rise... see the mage standing in the middle<br />of the road and note several of the other GOOD characters, who are nearby. The 'hounds' release and charge insanely towards the mage... a ranger/hunter, who had slid off a horse, let's loose an arrow towards the mage... the hounds leap for the throad, the air the arrow whizzes towards the unmoving mage's head.<br />Just as all are about to make contact... the mage's eyes blink for a moment... a look of surprise<br />appears on his face, then he blinks out of existence... the hounds crash awkardly into the ground (perhaps the sound of snapping bones -- the first hint of the real intensity of this fight).<br /><br />Battle ensues... a chosen variety of online gaming 'events' and fantasy 'cliches' appear in<br />the fight.... the battle is intense and serious. People die. Initially the battle appears<br />to be tilting slightly towards the GOOD guys - but this all changes when out of thin air, the 3<br />EVIL mages that previously dismounted, appear behind the GOOD guys and unleash a volley of<br />spells. 4 or 5 of the GOOD guys are immediately killed.. the remainder fight on - but with tide<br />quickly changed, and the 3 EVIL mages preparing another devastating round of spells... things look bleak. Never fear though, just as the 3 EVIL mages are about to cast their spells, behind each a shadowy elfy figure emerges - long knives drawn. The knives strike home and the EVIL mages are slain. The elves then charge forward to help their comrades. The remaining fighting is intense.<br />Though heading to defeat - the EVIL guys still manage to take down a few of the GOOD. The battle ends in a furious hand to hand combat fight with the final EVIL warrior vanquished by a<br />crunching deathblow of some sort.... anyway.<br /><br />Silence. Heavy breathing... sweat drips off a face... a morning mist rises over the scene.<br /><br />Out of nowhere (!!!), remember the frozen mage in the middle of the road? He suddenly blinks back into existence and unleashes a furious and dazzling blast of spells down the road in the direction from which the EVIL guys approached... obviously hitting nothing, since the battle is over.<br /><br />He glances around, sees the carnage, and in a European/Hungarian accent screams - "WTF!!! F!@$ing! F$@! I can't believe I F$^*ing missed it!"<br /><br />Remaining GOOD guys break into laughter. A chorus of "owned!" "ruled!" is heard....<br /><br />(switch to scenes of various college dorms, homes, computer labs... USA and foreign - guys<br />pushing back from their computers (if you look closely, you can see there aren't even any<br />graphics on the screen, just text)... a high-5, a fist pump, maybe a geeky celebration or<br />2.)<br /><br />Voice over.... ( Your first line DAN!!! )<br /><br /><br />"March 14, 1994..... it was a good day."<br /><br /><br />Bring up Ice Cube (obviously)... and roll the opening credits :-)<br /><br />[ What I'm going for is a gritty, intense, (maybe a little over the top, but not spoofed) action<br />scene that would appear straight out of a LOTR-type movie. For gamers, fights like these can be really intense and they "matter." The dictionary says:<br /><br />1) Proficiency, facility, or dexterity that is acquired or developed through training or experience. 2) An art, trade, or technique, particularly one requiring use of the hands or body.<br /> A developed talent or ability: writing skills.<br /><br />Skills or lacking of it. Thats the first thing people whine about when they die alone to a group of 12 people. Skills, or lacking of it. Thats the first thing people whine about when one particular clan recruits so many people, you couldn't tell who from who in irc if you take a sabbatical for a week. That is what skill mean to people. If you want to be elite, you need skills they say. You could be the most spelled up mage, or druid, or kender in the game, but you might just be a follower, a parasite, a beggar following a leader and scavenging for scraps of eq and spells that the leader toss aside. Basically, you might not be skillful. For that, you don't gain their respect, no.<br /><br />But lets step back, and reflect. Are skills really that pervasive in this world of gnomes, goblins and mavlads? Do they even play a part in our daily lives and most importantly, do they affect the outcome of any conflict? Skills I say, is an excuse, a deflection from the facts. The facts of our inefficiencies, of our failures and of our lack of skills. Your level 20 died to a group of 15 people? That is efficiency. No use trying to show skills by trying to solo you and letting you get away. People are result oriented, and when it comes the the crunch, results are what moves the world, not skills. How about that clan-that-shall-not-be-named recruiting every single bum, rat and rapist? That is diplomacy and great leadership. Even bums and rapists tend to follow leaders. Organizations must grow to face impending challenges. Resources, manpower, knowledge - these are some of the ingredients of creating a sustainable organization. In this world, the strong thrives and strength comes in numbers.<br /><br />In fact, even for each person, skills play very little part in his or her success. Have (superb) skills in a weapon? How about if the weapon you are using wouldn't even excite a poet? Have knowledge on where all spells will be loaded? Let me introduce you to a new concept: chance. Percentages. And luck. You could try a hundred times, and all it takes is one time for a lucky person to achieve all your efforts, and perceived skills. These will be the defination of how you will succeed in what you do. The most skillful person will fall from grace with just a bit of bad luck. Have you ever thought about "Argh, so close, if only the bash landed." or "Man, I was entry held. I even have good saves". AMS and nobash will help solve these and it takes skills! you claim. Well, every seen a mushroom cloud in your screen? Ever have a router going down on you?
